UAE Transport Guides: Traffic Fines, Salik, Nol Card, Parking and Driving Licences Explained

Transport in the UAE runs on federal traffic law, but every emirate handles its own enforcement, paid parking, public transport and vehicle services. A driver in Dubai deals with Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Abu Dhabi licences and vehicle registrations go through Abu Dhabi Police and TAMM, and the other emirates mostly use the Ministry of Interior (MOI) app and Emirates Vehicle Gate (EVG).

This section brings the practical guides together in one place: traffic fine lists and checks for every emirate, black points and how to remove them, how to dispute a fine, Salik tolls and recharge, parking fines, the nol card, the Dubai Metro map, driving licence checks and vehicle registration renewal. Each guide is built on official sources such as the RTA, the MOI, Salik and Dubai Police.

Fines, toll prices and campaigns change from time to time, so always confirm the final amount on the official app before you pay. If you received a fine, start with the guide for the emirate that issued it. Penalties that are not about driving, such as labour, visa or health insurance fines, are in our Fines and Violations section.

Frequently Asked

UAE Transport FAQs

How can I check traffic fines in the UAE?
You check traffic fines on the app or website of the authority in your emirate, using your plate number or traffic file number. In Dubai that means the RTA website and RTA Dubai app or Dubai Police. In the other emirates the MOI app and Emirates Vehicle Gate (EVG) are the usual routes, and Abu Dhabi also uses Abu Dhabi Police services.
How many black points lead to a licence suspension in the UAE?
Reaching 24 black points typically triggers a licence suspension of around 3 months on a first occurrence. The period can be longer for repeat offences, so confirm your own status with the traffic authority that issued your licence.
How can I remove black points from my licence?
Drivers can remove black points through official campaigns and approved courses, depending on the emirate. In 2026 the Ministry of Interior ran its Accident Free Day campaign, and compliant drivers had 4 black points removed on 25 September. Our black points guide explains each route.
How do I check my nol card balance in Dubai?
You can check a nol card balance on the RTA website with the 10 digit nol tag ID, in the RTA Dubai app, by tapping the card on an NFC phone, or at a Metro ticket machine. The RTA does not charge for the balance check.
How do I recharge Salik online?
You recharge Salik in about a minute through the Salik app or website, the DubaiNow app, the RTA Dubai app or your banking app. Enter your plate number or Salik account number, choose an amount and pay by card.
Is there a discount on UAE traffic fines?
Some emirates run discount schemes and some do not. Abu Dhabi and Sharjah have schemes with no published end date that cut a fine by 35% if it is paid within 60 days, while Dubai has no confirmed early payment discount. Our traffic fine discount guide lists what is active and what has ended.
Can I dispute a traffic fine in the UAE?
Yes, you can dispute a traffic fine by sending an objection to the authority that issued it, with your fine number, plate details and evidence. Dubai Police fines, RTA parking tickets and Salik fines each go to a different place, and most channels are online.
Which authority renews my vehicle registration?
It depends on where the vehicle is registered. Dubai vehicles renew through the RTA, Abu Dhabi vehicles mainly through TAMM and Abu Dhabi Police, and the remaining emirates through EVG. Dubai allows a 30 day grace period after expiry without a late fee, but it does not allow driving on expired papers.
